We recently stayed at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Carlsbad, California in one of the Magic Wizard Suites, and after doing LEGOLAND both as a day trip and as an overnight trip, I can definitely say staying at the hotel makes the whole experience feel very different.
The biggest thing for us was just how easy everything felt. We were already right at the park, breakfast was included, there were things for the kids to do at the hotel before and after our park day, and we didn’t have to spend much time figuring out how to entertain everyone in between activities. It felt like nonstop fun at the hotel. With four kids, that kind of convenience goes a long way.

Our kids were ages 4 through 11 when we stayed, and all four of them loved the hotel. We kept hearing “whoa” every time they found something new, and they talked just as much about the hotel as they did about LEGOLAND itself.
If you’re trying to decide whether staying onsite is worth it, here’s what the hotel is actually like, what the rooms are like for larger families, what’s included, what the food situation is like and how long I’d recommend staying.

What the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Feels Like
The Castle Hotel is definitely built with kids in mind, and you notice that the second you walk in.
There are LEGO models everywhere, building areas, play spaces, themed decor and activities happening throughout the hotel. It is obviously busy and full of families, but because the entire hotel is designed around kids, there were so many options of places to play, it never felt too crowded.

That was probably one of my favorite parts of staying there. A lot of hotels welcome families, but this one is actually designed for them. There are little details throughout the hotel that make life easier with kids, like the lower breakfast buffet where kids can serve themselves, play areas near where parents are sitting and entertainment happening right at the hotel in the evenings.
It made the trip feel less like we were just sleeping near LEGOLAND and more like the hotel was part of the experience.
LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Room Themes
The Castle Hotel currently has three main room themes:
-
Magic Wizard
-
Knights & Dragons
-
Royal Princess
We stayed in a Magic Wizard Suite and loved it. The room had all the wizard theming you would expect: LEGO models, magical details and decorations throughout — but it still felt functional enough for a family staying there for a couple of nights.
The regular LEGOLAND Hotel across the walkway has different themes, including Pirate, Adventure, LEGO Friends, NINJAGO and LEGO City, so if your kids have a very strong preference, it’s worth looking at both hotels before deciding.

Our Magic Wizard Suite for a Family of 6
Finding hotel rooms that comfortably fit six people is always one of the more difficult parts of travel for us, so I was really happy with how the suite was set up.
Our room had a main sleeping area for adults along with bunk beds, a trundle bed and a pull-out couch, which gave everyone their own place to sleep without us needing to book two rooms.

For our family of six, it felt spacious enough and comfortable for a short stay. The kids also have their own sleeping area with their own TV, which was helpful because we could put the younger kids to bed first without making the entire hotel room dark. They have this magical night light in the kids room that looks like a starry night sky which the kids absolutely loved.
I was also impressed that every room included a box of LEGOs to play and build with, so during any downtime in our room the kids were creating all sorts of new things.

Standard Castle Hotel rooms generally sleep up to five guests, while the suites can accommodate larger families, with some room configurations sleeping up to nine. If you’re traveling with four or more kids, I would definitely look closely at the suite layouts because they work much better for bigger families than a typical hotel room.
The Treasure Hunt and Secret Vault
One of the things our kids talked about the most was the treasure hunt connected to the room.
There is a locked vault inside the room, but the kids have to complete a scavenger hunt around the hotel to figure out the combination. Ours immediately wanted to go solve it as soon as they realized there was something locked inside.
Once they figured out the code and opened the vault, there were LEGO sets waiting for them. What was even more fun was that the hotel refilled the vault the next day, so they got another little surprise during our stay.
It’s a fairly simple thing, but it was one of those details that the kids kept talking about. It also gave them something fun to do around the hotel when we were there. It definitely made it feel like such an experience to be there instead of just a place to sleep.
There’s Quite a Bit to Do at the Hotel
One of the main reasons I recommend staying two nights if you can is that there is actually enough going on at the hotel that you’ll want time to enjoy it. If you stay one night and spend your entire day inside LEGOLAND, it’s easy to miss most of the hotel activities. We liked having enough time to slow down and let the kids enjoy the things we were already paying for.
The Pool
The Castle Hotel has a heated outdoor pool, and it’s a great break from the park if you need a little mid-day reset, or to jump in and cool off after a full day at LEGOLAND. We found the pool was less crowded during the middle of the day. Around 4pm and on after the parks closed, it definitely got busier.

The hotel provides towels, and younger children may be required to wear life jackets depending on their height, so that’s something to keep in mind if you have little kids. If swimming is important to your kids, make sure to plan pool time instead of assuming you’ll fit it in later. Theme park days have a way of taking up the entire day very quickly. We decided to bring the kids back in the middle of the day to do lunch and swim because it was so hot, and it was the perfect move. The pool wasn't too crowded because most people were at the park still.

Outdoor Movies
The hotel also shows movies outside in the evening. This was a really nice option after a long park day because you don’t have to plan another activity or go anywhere else. We loved being able to sit outside, let the kids watch the movie and have a much slower end to the day. And with San Diego weather being usually pretty wonderful, an outdoor movie at night feels like the perfect ending to an already fun-filled day.
We noticed several families bringing in pizza or other takeout and eating it while they watched the movie, which I thought was a great idea and something I’d probably do if we stayed again.

Evening Entertainment
There is also nightly entertainment at the hotel, with things like Knight School (a major highlight for my 4 yr old), LEGO building activities, Bingo (my 9 yr old's personal favorite) and storytime.
The schedule can change, so just check the app or in-room iPad for the entertainment schedule when you arrive instead of planning around a specific event ahead of time.
This all just felt so fun for the kids and with new entertainment happening every hour, they loved deciding their own "schedule" and playing on the playground in between. It felt like the party never stopped and it was all geared towards the kids.
Breakfast Is Included
A hot breakfast buffet is included for registered hotel guests, which is a big perk if you’re traveling with a bigger family.
Breakfast is served at Dragon’s Den, the restaurant inside the Castle Hotel. There is a standard buffet for adults and another buffet that is actually built at kid height so the kids can serve themselves.
That might sound like a minor detail, but it really sums up the way the hotel is set up. It made my kids feel so grown up and they loved it. So many things are designed around letting kids be involved and making family travel a little easier.
The breakfast had enough options that everyone in our family could find something, and being able to feed six people before heading into the park without paying for another full meal was definitely helpful.
Food at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel
The main restaurant at the Castle Hotel is Dragon’s Den. We ate there for dinner one night and while the food was decent, it is definitely incredibly expensive. That’s not especially surprising for a theme park hotel, but when you’re paying for six people, it adds up quickly.
The good thing is that you’re not limited to eating every meal there.
The regular LEGOLAND Hotel is just across the walkway and has additional restaurants, including Bricks Family Restaurant and Skyline Café. You can also pick up food somewhere else and bring it back to the hotel.
If we were staying for two nights again, I would probably eat at the hotel one night just for the experience of it, and then grab something easier like pizza or takeout the other night and eat it outside during the movie. There's so many great restaurants nearby.
How to Make the Whole LEGOLAND Trip Easier
The location was of the Castle Hotel was such a huge perk. It's right next to the entrance to LEGOLAND, so there is no loading everyone into the car, driving to the park, parking, unloading the stroller and doing the whole process again at the end of the day.
You just walk over.
With four kids, that made the whole trip feel so chill and laid back in the morning. It was also nice knowing we could go back to the hotel if someone needed a break, wanted to swim or just needed a little downtime instead of committing to staying inside the park all day.
Here's the Deal With Early Access to LEGOLAND
Hotel guests also get early access to select LEGOLAND attractions before the park opens to the general public. The important thing to know is that the entire park is not open during early access. Only certain rides are available, and the list can change.
It is still a really nice perk, especially on busy days, because some of the rides offered during early entry are popular ones. You can get one or two bigger attractions done before the park fills up. The Coastersaurus and Ninjago are two rides that are commonly open early (we did both of those during our early access time) and both of those get very long lines as soon as the park opens to everyone and stay that way for a lot of the day, so enjoying them before official opening time was really nice.
I would check the early-access ride list the night before and decide which attraction you want to go to first instead of trying to figure it out once you’re already inside. For example, in our case, Ninjago and Coastersaurus were in two different directions. Coastersaurus' line goes slower, so I would probably do that one first since it will get longer, then jump over to Ninjago right before the park opens.

What Ages Is the Castle Hotel Best For?
Our kids were 4 through 11, and all of them enjoyed it. If I had to choose the real sweet spot, I would probably say somewhere around ages 5 to 9. That’s the age where they seem to get the most excited about the room themes, treasure hunt, LEGO surprises and evening entertainment.
That said, our 11-year-old still had a lot of fun, especially because she was there with younger siblings. I wouldn’t rule it out just because you have an older elementary-age child. If they like building with Legos, the hotel still feels fun and seeing all the builds and themed things around the hotel is fun. And If you have a mix of ages, it also works really well.
If you were traveling only with teenagers, I probably wouldn’t pay extra for the hotel specifically for the theming. But for families with younger kids, especially kids who already love LEGO, it’s a really fun age experience.
How Many Nights I’d Recommend
I think two nights is ideal if your schedule and budget allow it. One night works, but you may end up feeling like you barely experienced the hotel because most of your time is spent inside LEGOLAND. If you want to do one night, I'd try to get to the hotel a bit early on check-in day. They'll let you drop your bags off and swim and enjoy the amenities before the room is ready.
With two nights, you have time to arrive and enjoy the hotel, do the scavenger hunt, swim, watch the outdoor movie and participate in some of the evening activities without feeling like you’re taking time away from the park. Then you can wake up, eat breakfast, use early access and spend a full day at LEGOLAND.

If you're trying to see everything in LEGOLAND park, I think two days there with a little hotel time in between is perfect. You can get to mostly everything you want in a few days and repeat your favorite rides again without feeling too rushed. If you want to see more on my thoughts of how to do the parks from a first-time perspective, you can see that blog post here.
If you’re also planning to visit the LEGOLAND Water Park or SEA LIFE Aquarium, having that extra time makes even more sense.
To Recap the Main Things I’d Want Know Before Staying...
Make sure you book the right room category for your family size. Standard rooms sleep fewer guests, while suites give larger families a lot more flexibility.
I would also check the hotel entertainment schedule when you arrive because activities and times can change.
For early park access, remember that only select rides are open. It’s a useful perk, but it is not full access to the entire park before everyone else.
And finally, don’t over-schedule your hotel time. If you’re paying to stay onsite, give yourself a little space to actually enjoy the pool, treasure hunt and evening activities instead of treating the hotel as somewhere you only come back to sleep.
Was the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Worth It for Us?
For our family, yes, absolutely!
It was definitely more expensive than staying at a regular hotel nearby, but the value wasn’t just in the room itself. It was the convenience of being right at LEGOLAND, having breakfast included, fitting all six of us comfortably into one suite and having entertainment built into the hotel.
More than anything, it was just an easy couple of days that felt effortlessly fun.
The kids always had something they wanted to do, we weren’t constantly driving somewhere or trying to come up with another activity, and they genuinely loved being at the hotel.
They kept telling us how much fun they were having, and the fact that they were just as excited about going back to the hotel as they were about going into LEGOLAND says a lot.
I’d absolutely stay there again.
